7 Branding Myths Debunked – by Jane & Ian

There are several myths on branding. Some of the most common ones we have come across are:

Myth #1: A brand is just a logo, a tagline and a product

It’s not just that, these are components of a brand but they do not equal a brand. A brand is an overall experience that your customers get when they interact with your company, product or you as a person. It is also an overall perception towards your company, product or a person.


Myth #2: Marketing = branding

Marketing does not depend on the public to exist. It is a set of goal-oriented activities in order to achieve success in business. Generally it is about making people to notice the business & product.

Whereas branding depends on the public in order to exist. It is a 2-way street that depends on the brand values, gut feelings, trustworthy behaviour & consistently delivered promised services.


Myth #3: I have a great product, so I do not need to focus on branding so much

Good branding cannot make a poor product to sell whereas poor branding cannot make a good product to sell. If your business cultivates enough name recognition & move towards becoming the standard in the niche, more people will buy your products or services.


Myth #4: Branding is expensive

No, branding is FREE! However the mistakes on branding are more expensive. Yes you heard me right because if you build your brand well, your investment in branding will reward you handsomely.


Myth #5: Just follow the branding of the market leader

The market do not need another copycats or cheap knock-offs. The more you copy the market leader, the more you end up building the brand for that particular market leader.


Myth #6: Branding can wait. Business operations are more important

Now everyone may or should have the ideas of what is branding. Therefore, we shouldn’t delay more. You cannot retrofit a brand around a logo or an advertising campaign, especially if the advertising campaign is ineffective.


Myth #7: My product will sell itself

Having this idea can be dangerous as no product or brand can stay on to be the market’s #1 forever. There will be challengers every now and then and the best way of dealing with this is to have a long-term branding strategy to convey your brand’s uniqueness. Strive for being the Only One, rather than being the Best One.
